Direct service requires training, screening and a six-month commitment

SAFE's current direct-service requirements say volunteers must be 21 or older, while some opportunities are open to adults 18 and older. Applicants submit an application and references, complete a criminal background check, interview with Volunteer Services and program staff, take 40 hours of Core Advocacy Training and complete another 8 to 16 hours of role-specific training.

The stated commitment is at least eight hours per month for six months after Core Advocacy Training. SAFE says payment is not required to volunteer. It lists possible background-check costs of $12 to $43 and says some roles may also require TB testing or fingerprinting; scholarships and reimbursements are available. Those requirements apply to the direct-service path and should not be copied onto every flexible or one-time activity.
