The food-runner onboarding route is active
Keep Austin Fed’s current volunteer page invites new food rescue runners to request membership through GivePulse and complete an orientation. Approved volunteers then receive access to Food Rescue US, the scheduling platform where the organization publishes open runs.
This is an active application route, not a promise that a preferred neighborhood or time has an opening. Keep Austin Fed says runs occur every day of the week, but its FAQ notes that most happen during ordinary weekday hours, with some weekend and occasional evening options. Applicants see the full calendar only after approval.
A typical run picks up surplus food from a commercial contributor and delivers it to a partner organization. The organization estimates an average run takes about one hour, while noting that some take only 15 to 20 minutes and unusually large donations can take longer.
- Start from Keep Austin Fed’s volunteer page and use its current GivePulse join link.
- Wait for approval and Food Rescue US access before choosing a run.
- Read the vehicle-size note and pickup instructions for each assignment.
- Treat availability as live; do not travel without a scheduled run.

Registration requires driving documents and orientation
The official onboarding page says GivePulse applicants upload a driver’s license and proof of current insurance. They can then choose either a one-hour Zoom orientation or a self-paced FreshLearn module. Keep Austin Fed says approved applicants receive the Food Rescue US link within one business day after completing those steps.
Volunteers use their own vehicles, time and gas. The FAQ says a car with air conditioning is necessary because transport time and Texas heat matter for food safety. A compact car can handle some runs, while Food Rescue US identifies assignments that expect more cargo space.
The public instructions do not advertise mileage reimbursement or a paid-driver arrangement. Keep Austin Fed describes its rescue routes as volunteer service, with staff using a refrigerated van for some unusually large or temperature-sensitive donations.

The two official pages conflict on food-handler certification
Keep Austin Fed’s current onboarding page says a food handler’s certificate is encouraged but not required. Its volunteer FAQ, however, says volunteers are required to have a food handler’s permit. Both pages are live on the organization’s site.
Because those instructions conflict, Help Austin is not declaring the certificate optional or mandatory. Ask volunteer@keepaustinfed.org which rule applies before accepting a run. The onboarding page links to state-approved courses and says certification generally costs $10–$15, takes one to two hours and lasts two years.
This discrepancy is important planning information, not evidence that the program is inactive. The membership, orientation and scheduling route is current; only the certification wording needs direct confirmation.

Licensed teens may apply, with added consent
Keep Austin Fed says food rescue runners must have a driver’s license. A licensed person under 18 may volunteer after a parent signs a consent form and liability release. The public FAQ does not name a separate numeric minimum age beyond the licensing requirement.
The organization encourages runners to bring a friend or child as a helper, while warning that some assignments involve loading docks, large trucks or cold walk-in refrigerators. Volunteers should judge the specific route before bringing a young helper and should never bring an animal because of food-safety rules.
Those companion rules do not replace the approved runner’s responsibility. The registered driver should confirm the assignment, follow handling instructions and make sure any helper can safely enter the listed pickup and delivery locations.

Individual runs are flexible; group service uses a different route
Keep Austin Fed publishes no minimum number of rescues for an individual volunteer. Once approved, runners choose assignments that fit their schedule. That makes the role flexible, but the organization says the largest share of its runs occurs Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
The onboarding page says it does not currently have opportunities suitable for one-time volunteer groups. Organizations, companies or friends seeking an ongoing team commitment can instead ask about adopting a food run.
An adopted run is a weekly responsibility, not a single service day. Keep Austin Fed says it works with the group to select a route, provides onsite training and accompanies the team leader on the first rescue. Interested groups are directed to email volunteer@keepaustinfed.org rather than assume a route is available.

The latest published impact figures cover 2025
Keep Austin Fed’s current impact page says its supporters rescued more than one million pounds of food in 2025, equivalent to 870,000 meals. It also reports nearly 360 volunteers completing more than 9,000 food runs.
The same summary says donations from more than 120 contributor locations were matched with more than 100 recipient locations. These are organization-published 2025 totals, not a forecast for 2026 and not a claim about the impact of any single new volunteer.
Help Austin reviewed the volunteer, FAQ, adopted-run and impact pages on September 27, 2026. The onboarding route was active, specific run availability remained behind the approved scheduling platform, and the food-handler certificate conflict remained unresolved on the public pages.
