The 40-container announcement is current; Clean Streets Day has ended

Keep Austin Beautiful announced that it partnered with Honda and Austin Resource Recovery to install 40 new waste and recycling containers in high-need, well-traveled areas. The September 15 announcement connected the containers with the September 19 Clean Streets Day campaign and said 20 volunteer groups were scheduled to host projects.

The official announcement does not publish a location-by-location container map, so Help Austin is not naming placements that cannot be verified. It also describes plans made before the cleanup; no official post-event attendance or litter total was available when this story was reviewed September 20.

Clean Streets Day itself took place Saturday, September 19. Although the program page still displays a Volunteer link and invitation language, that dated event is over. Readers should not treat it as a current signup. The ongoing opportunity is Keep Austin Beautiful's Adopt-A-Street application, along with separate community-cleanup programs.

Adopt-A-Street applications are open to groups, not individuals

Keep Austin Beautiful's current Adopt-A-Street page displays Apply today and Apply now links. The program is for groups only; individuals cannot adopt a segment through this route. Groups choose at least one-half mile of an Austin street and make a two-year commitment.

An adopting group must complete at least four litter cleanups each year. Two must align with Keep Austin Beautiful Day in April and Clean Streets Day in September. The group must also submit an online report after every cleanup and follow the organization's safety procedures.

This is an application, not instant approval or a guaranteed street assignment. Prospective groups can use the official interactive map to look for segments, then submit the linked application. Wait for Keep Austin Beautiful to confirm the segment and next steps before announcing a cleanup date.

  • Confirm that your group can sustain a two-year commitment.
  • Use the official map to identify a possible half-mile segment.
  • Submit the group application through Keep Austin Beautiful.
  • Wait for program confirmation before planning the first cleanup.

Fees depend on the type and size of the adopting group

The official fee schedule is $125 per year for a community group or nonprofit, $750 per year for a small business with fewer than 100 employees, and $1,500 per year for a large business with 100 or more employees. Each category carries a minimum two-year commitment, making the stated totals $250, $1,500 and $3,000 respectively.

In return, Keep Austin Beautiful says adopting groups receive free cleanup supplies, project guidance and trash-collection services. Those supports do not remove the group's responsibilities: organizers still need to schedule the required cleanups, register youth correctly, follow safety rules and file timely impact reports.

All volunteers under 18 must be registered by a parent or legal guardian. Independent registrations from minors are not accepted. Group leaders planning a youth activity should resolve supervision and registration questions with Keep Austin Beautiful before choosing a date.

A one-time cleanup is the alternative for groups not ready to adopt

A two-year street adoption will not fit every neighborhood group, company or club. Keep Austin Beautiful separately invites residents to organize Community Cleanups and says it supplies the materials needed to run one. That is the better starting point for a group that wants a single project without the adoption schedule and annual contribution.

The Clean Streets Day page also points readers toward Adopt-A-Creek and the recurring Love Where You Live Day, held on the second Saturday of each month. These are different programs with different commitments; the existence of one does not imply an open place in another.

Choose the program that matches the group's actual capacity. For Adopt-A-Street, apply through the live program page. For a one-time project, use the Community Cleanups page and confirm supply timing, disposal arrangements, boundaries and safety guidance directly with the organizer.
