Clean Lady Bird Lake returns September 26: how to volunteer

The next cleanup begins at 9 a.m. September 26

Keep Austin Beautiful’s next Clean Lady Bird Lake event is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026, beginning at 9 a.m. The organization coordinates volunteers at more than 10 locations around the lake, with assignments along the shoreline and on kayaks or stand-up paddle boards.

Help Austin verified the date, time and live registration route on September 14. The official registration page is available now, but capacity is managed by individual site and can change. A registration submission is not a reason to arrive at an unconfirmed location; use the shift confirmation for the exact meeting point and assignment.

Every participant must register individually

Keep Austin Beautiful says registration is first come, first served and does not reserve blocks of places. Groups are welcome, but every participant must complete an individual registration, and the organization cannot guarantee that a group will be placed together.

The program normally opens registration three weeks before each cleanup. That makes the current registration page the authoritative place to see which assignments still have room. For a large company group, the organization directs planners to its separate corporate-partnership or Love Where You Live options rather than asking one person to hold public-event places.

Parents must register and attend with minors

All volunteers under 18 must be registered by a parent or legal guardian. The City of Austin’s event instructions also say that the parent or guardian must register and attend with the youth volunteer; minors may not submit independent registrations.

Individual site descriptions can add age restrictions, especially for water-based work. Families should read the selected shift rather than assuming every site accepts the same ages. If a listing does not answer a safety or accessibility question, contact the organizer before committing.

Bring water and prepare for an outdoor morning

Site leaders and boat donors provide cleanup materials and watercraft unless a shift is specifically labeled BYO-boat. Volunteers should bring a full water bottle and dress for the weather. The City listing also recommends a snack and sunscreen.

Pets are not permitted for safety and liability reasons, though service animals are welcome. Keep Austin Beautiful runs cleanups rain or shine unless conditions create a direct safety threat; if cancellation becomes necessary, the organization says it will send notice 48 hours in advance.

Water-based shifts have extra safety considerations

Keep Austin Beautiful tells lake volunteers to stay alert for toxic algae blooms, invasive zebra mussels and poison ivy, oak or sumac. Those cautions are especially important because the program includes both shoreline and on-water assignments rather than one uniform task.

Volunteers who select a BYO-boat site must have a flotation device available whenever they are off shore. Do not assume that owning a kayak automatically qualifies someone for every on-water shift; follow the requirements in the specific registration listing and the site leader’s instructions.

This is a recurring program, but September 26 is a dated opening

Clean Lady Bird Lake has operated since 2009 and now runs every other month. Keep Austin Beautiful lists later cleanups for December 5, 2026, and February 6, April 17 and June 5, 2027. Those future dates are planning markers; their registrations are not necessarily open yet because the organization opens each event about three weeks ahead.
