Austin shifts are open this week, but the counts are live
As reviewed Sunday, October 11, the Central Texas Food Bank's live Austin calendar showed openings on Tuesday, October 13, across several assignments. Examples included three places at the Dove Springs mobile pantry from 8:15 to 11:30 a.m., four in the Austin kitchen from 8:45 to 11:30 a.m., five at Fresh Harvest Farm from 9 a.m. to noon and 22 in the evening warehouse shift from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
The same portal displayed additional Austin-area openings later in the week, including warehouse, kitchen, market-restocking and mobile-pantry roles. Those numbers are a dated snapshot, not a promise: registrations can fill places, and cancellations can reopen them. Open the live calendar to see the current count for the exact shift before making plans.
Central Texas Food Bank says individuals may self-register for opportunities that show available space. A visible event is not the same as a confirmed place; create or sign in to a VolunteerHub account, complete the exact shift registration and keep the resulting confirmation. Walk-ins are not guaranteed an assignment.
- Open the live Austin calendar for current capacity.
- Register every participant for the exact shift.
- Keep the VolunteerHub confirmation.
- Recheck the assignment before traveling because cancellations and registrations change counts.

Choose a role that fits every participant's age
The Food Bank publishes different minimum ages by assignment. Warehouse volunteers may be age 8 or older, mobile-pantry volunteers age 12 or older, and kitchen or garden volunteers age 15 or older. The live calendar can add role-specific limits; for example, the October 13 market-restocking shift was labeled for adults age 18 or older and described lifting up to 30 pounds.
People under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult age 21 or older. The Food Bank allows up to two minors per adult for onsite roles and one minor per adult at mobile food pantries. Every adult and minor must have a separate registration for the shift.
Age eligibility does not establish accessibility or personal fit. Live listings may describe standing, lifting, weather exposure or other duties. Read the selected assignment and contact the Food Bank before registering if an accommodation, allergy or physical requirement affects safe participation.

Every person needs a VolunteerHub registration
Central Texas Food Bank directs all volunteers to create VolunteerHub accounts and reserve places. Its individual guide says every participant must register separately, including friends, relatives and children who arrive together.
Do not register one adult and assume accompanying minors are covered. The chaperone and child each need their own place in the exact shift, and the adult-to-minor ratio must still be met. A full or reserved label means the public calendar does not currently have an individual opening for that assignment.
The Food Bank says opportunities generally open for registration up to one month ahead. It also advises checking one or two days before a desired shift because cancellations may return places to the calendar. That is a useful retry strategy, not a guarantee that space will appear.

Groups of five or more use a separate request process
The group guide is intended for teams of five or more and says most group assignments involve warehouse food sorting. A group planning more than two weeks ahead may submit the official request form; the volunteer team says it usually responds within five business days.
A request is not a reservation. The Food Bank says a group is confirmed only after it receives a unique registration link. Group members must then use that link and complete their registrations at least five business days before the assignment.
Groups with less than two weeks before their desired date are told to use the individual calendar instead, with each person registering for a live opening. Offsite group projects follow a different route and currently require a $2,500 sponsorship, so teams should not treat them as a no-cost substitute for an onsite shift.

Dress for food-safety rules and arrive before the start
The volunteer requirements call for shoes with closed toes and heels and a shirt with sleeves. Kitchen volunteers must also wear clothing that covers their legs. The Food Bank says it may turn away participants whose clothing does not meet safety requirements.
Volunteers should arrive five to 10 minutes before the listed start time and stay for the full shift. The organization does not provide partial service credit, and late arrivals may be unable to participate; warehouse volunteers more than 30 minutes late cannot join the shift.
Some work areas are not climate controlled, and the Food Bank warns that food-handling environments can expose volunteers to common allergens. Do not attend when sick. Help Austin reviewed the official program pages and live Austin calendar on October 11, 2026; the organizer's confirmation and current listing control any later change.
