The organization currently lists four in-person volunteer paths

Caritas of Austin's official volunteer page currently lists four in-person paths: preparing and serving lunch in the Community Kitchen, working directly with clients, providing administrative support, and helping with donation deliveries or pickups. It also links to a GivePulse interest form and says a staff member will follow up within two business days.

That response window is not a guarantee that a particular date, role or group size remains open. The public page describes the standing programs, while placement depends on Caritas confirming a fit and start date. Submit the form or contact the volunteer coordinator before making travel or group plans.

The work supports a broader person-centered approach to homelessness. Caritas says its programs connect housing, food, education and employment; volunteers should choose a role by its actual duties and commitment rather than assuming every opportunity involves the same client contact.

  • Read the role-specific age, schedule and training requirements.
  • Submit the official interest form with the work you can realistically sustain.
  • Wait for staff confirmation before arriving or announcing a group day.
  • Ask where to report; assignments may not all begin at the same entrance or site.

Kitchen shifts are the clearest option for teens and small groups

Community Kitchen volunteers prepare and serve lunch to people experiencing homelessness. The published shift runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; first-time volunteers must arrive at 8:45 a.m. for orientation.

The minimum age is 13. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and the program welcomes groups of up to 15 people. Those are eligibility limits, not proof that every weekday can accept a 15-person group, so group leaders should secure confirmation before choosing a date.

Caritas describes the Community Kitchen as part of its food program and says it serves nutritious lunches Monday through Friday. The public page does not promise a specific task station, meal or client count for a volunteer's shift.

Direct service requires the largest commitment

Direct-service volunteers work one-on-one with clients toward individual life goals. Caritas requires volunteers in this role to be at least 18, available during business hours and able to serve six to eight hours each week for a minimum of four months.

The organization also publishes a training range of seven to 18 hours through Caritas University. That range should not be compressed into a single-session promise; the role is designed for sustained, trained client support rather than an occasional drop-in shift.

Applicants who cannot meet that weekly and four-month commitment should choose another path. The kitchen, administrative and delivery options have different schedules, and at-home kits offer a project that does not require direct client work.

Office and donation-transport roles happen during business hours

Administrative volunteers may help with filing, shredding, data entry, outreach preparation or audit support. Caritas lists these opportunities Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and requires volunteers to be at least 18.

Donation-delivery and pickup volunteers help move in-kind donations to Caritas offices throughout the year. The timing is flexible within business hours, but volunteers must be willing to use their own transportation. The page does not say that mileage, fuel or parking is reimbursed, so applicants should ask before accepting an assignment if those costs matter.

Neither listing is a promise of immediate placement. The volunteer coordinator confirms current needs, duties and scheduling after an applicant expresses interest.

Care kits provide an at-home alternative

Caritas also publishes five at-home projects: hygiene kits, snack kits, period-supply packs, winter care kits and larger winter-preparedness kits. Each list names the requested contents, from toiletries and shelf-stable snacks to cold-weather supplies.

Follow the current item list rather than substituting products based on an old social post. Businesses planning a kit assembly are directed to contact Caritas first. Individual volunteers should likewise confirm drop-off timing and whether the organization currently needs the kit type they plan to make.

An at-home kit is a supply project, not evidence that the maker has been accepted into an in-person volunteer role. Use the official volunteer form separately if you also want a kitchen, client-support, office or transport placement.
