Applications are open through October 16

The City of Austin’s Tree Ambassador page currently says applications for the 2026–27 cohort are open through Friday, October 16, 2026. The linked City application loaded as an active Tree Ambassadors form when Help Austin checked it on October 3.

This is a competitive cohort application, not an instant volunteer signup or a guaranteed placement. The City says selected applicants will be notified by November 1, and the first required session is scheduled for November 7.

Apply through the City’s Formstack link before the deadline and keep any confirmation it provides. Do not report to a training or neighborhood event unless the program accepts you and sends the location and participation instructions.

  • Submit the official application by October 16.
  • Keep the application confirmation and watch for a decision by November 1.
  • Review all nine training dates before applying.
  • Wait for acceptance and location details before attending.

This is paid neighborhood service, not an unpaid drop-in shift

Austin describes Tree Ambassadors as neighborhood voices for green spaces. Participants promote tree planting and care, teach others about the urban forest, lead or support events, workshops and tree walks, and connect with community leaders.

Ambassadors earn $25 per hour and must be able to verify authorization to work in the United States. The City’s public page does not describe the program as a conventional City job posting, promise a specific total number of paid hours or guarantee that every applicant will be selected.

That distinction matters: the program combines community service and public education with compensation and a formal cohort commitment. Someone seeking a single unpaid tree-planting shift should use a separate organizer’s live volunteer calendar instead of this application.

Plan for 10 hours a month over seven months

The published expectation is 10 hours of work per month for seven months. Applicants must also agree to attend nine mandatory, in-person training and service sessions.

Every listed session runs from 9 a.m. to noon. The City says locations will be shared with accepted participants, so the public schedule is enough to check dates and times but not to plan transportation to a specific address yet.

Before applying, compare the full schedule with work, caregiving, travel and accessibility needs. The public page does not offer a remote attendance option or say that an applicant may replace a required session with another activity.

The nine required dates run from November through May

The cohort opens with welcome and orientation on November 7, followed by Tree Planting Best Practices on December 5 and Emerald Ash Borer Monitoring and Awareness on December 12, 2026.

The 2027 dates are Structural Pruning for Beginners on January 23, a Tree ID Tour on February 27, It’s My Park Day on March 6, End of Year Planting on March 27, Keep Austin Beautiful Day on April 17, and the closing celebration on May 15.

These are required cohort sessions, not nine separately advertised public volunteer openings. Completing the application does not reserve a place at any of them; accepted ambassadors receive the locations and next steps from the City.

The work centers on local tree knowledge and community leadership

The training sequence combines practical tree care, species identification, pest awareness and public-facing service. The City’s related Think Trees program also invites residents to learn about neighborhood trees, support planting and maintenance, and explore hosting tree-identification walks.

Applicants do not need to infer a personal project, assigned neighborhood or guaranteed event from those broad goals. The Tree Ambassador page does not publish individual placements, final locations or a promise that every participant will lead an event alone.

For questions about the cohort, the City lists ThinkTrees@AustinTexas.gov. Use that program address to clarify accommodations or an essential scheduling issue before relying on the opportunity.
