The adult program is open, but an application is not a placement

Austin Public Library’s current volunteer page lists seven adult pathways with active needs as of October 2, 2026. Applicants must be at least 17, apply through the library’s GivePulse page, complete a phone or in-person screening interview, attend orientation and pass a criminal background investigation before beginning service.

The standard request is at least three months and two hours per week; several program-specific roles ask for six months. The library explicitly says not every application or interview results in a placement offer, so submitting the form should not be treated as approval or permission to report to a branch.

Choose a role whose published schedule and skills fit, then wait for an accepted placement. New opportunities are posted to the official page, and the Volunteer Services coordinator invites applicants to ask about a suitable role when none of the listed openings is a match.

  • Review the role’s schedule and commitment before applying.
  • Use the library’s GivePulse application rather than arriving at a branch.
  • Request the Volunteer Accommodation Request Form when reasonable accommodations would help you serve.
  • Do not treat an interview as a placement offer.

Games and language practice have three current openings

Pleasant Hill Branch is seeking an experienced Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master for tween and teen sessions on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 3:50 to 6:35 p.m. The role includes setup, explaining rules, running the game and customer service, with a regular six-month commitment.

Twin Oaks Branch currently needs a fluent American Sign Language volunteer to co-facilitate a welcoming ASL practice group on Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. That role is weekly and asks for six months.

Board With Books at Central Library lists two volunteer positions for the third Thursday of each month from 5 to 8 p.m. The library is looking for volunteers who enjoy modern and traditional games and can create a friendly, nonjudgmental environment for a six-month, once-a-month commitment.

Storytime assistants support the room rather than perform

Twin Oaks Branch lists Storytime Assistant needs on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 9:45 to 11:45. One Wednesday position is marked volunteer pending, while the page separately lists Thursday and Saturday needs without that label.

Storytime assistants help with setup, customer service, materials, tidying, light shelving and support for youth librarians. The librarians—not the volunteers—do the reading and performing. The published commitment is at least six months.

Because one slot is already labeled pending and capacity can change, applicants should name a still-listed schedule in their application and wait for the library’s placement decision rather than assuming every repeated time is open.

Coding4All adds two October start schedules

Coding4All is seeking adult program assistants familiar with JavaScript or p5.js who can communicate patiently, work with learners from varied backgrounds and help create or follow creative-coding lesson plans. The program prioritizes people of marginalized genders and asks volunteers for a six-month commitment.

Central Library lists the second Tuesday of each month beginning October 13 from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. Yarborough Branch lists the third Tuesday of each month beginning October 20 at the same time.

Those are recurring starts, not one-time drop-in events. Applicants should be prepared to serve the continuing monthly schedule and complete the same interview, orientation, placement and background-check process as other adult volunteers.

Archives students and event helpers can apply now

The Austin History Center is accepting applications from college and graduate students in information science, informatics, archival studies and related fields who need supervised practical experience for a capstone or practicum. The center describes capacity as limited and welcomes an application as the first step, not a guaranteed placement.

Central Library’s Programs and Events team is also accepting additions to its volunteer pool. Those volunteers help with programs and events about once a month or more, need familiarity with the Central Library layout and must be flexible about customer-service and event tasks.

The event-pool role asks for six months and notes that volunteers who can walk or take transit are preferred so parking remains available for attendees. The archives-student path works on a semester basis and should be discussed with the center when it relates to a course requirement.

Several popular programs are not currently placing volunteers

The same official page says English Language Talk Time, Austin History Center docent work, the Sewing/Mending Circle, Practiquemos Español and Children’s Room Greeter positions have no opportunities at this time. Library Materials Circulation at the Gillum Branch is marked volunteer pending rather than openly available.

The fall Teen Volunteer Program application has closed. The page says the next teen window is December 1–31 for spring service, while adults age 17 and older may use the adult program if a current role fits.

Austin Public Library does not offer one-time group service projects. People seeking community-service credit face a separate process that can take up to a month, requires at least three months of service and a deadline at least four months after the application. Review those rules before relying on library service for a legal or educational requirement.
