Six opportunity types are currently presented as open or seeking volunteers

Austin Public Library's live volunteer page currently names six adult routes without a 'pending' or 'no opportunities' label: American Sign Language practice, beginning Spanish or French classes, Storytime assistance, Board With Books, student projects at the Austin History Center, and the Central Library programs-and-events volunteer pool. Help Austin reviewed that status on October 23, 2026.

That count is about opportunity types, not guaranteed vacancies. A single application may still be screened against branch schedules, program needs and available supervision. The Library explicitly says an interview or application does not guarantee placement, so wait for an acceptance before rearranging a weekly schedule.

Several other roles remain visible on the same page but are marked pending or unavailable. This guide separates those statuses instead of treating every role description as an opening.

  • Choose a role and schedule that the Library currently labels as a need.
  • Apply through the linked Austin Public Library GivePulse portal.
  • Treat publication here as an availability snapshot, not a placement offer.
  • Recheck the Library page before applying because individual openings can fill.

Language volunteers can support ASL, Spanish or French practice

The American Sign Language Practice Program is seeking kind, patient volunteers who are fluent in ASL to co-facilitate a weekly practice space at the Twin Oaks Branch, 1800 South Fifth Street. The posted need is Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with a six-month weekly commitment.

For spoken-language learning, the Library is also seeking volunteers fluent in Spanish or French who can speak slowly and clearly with beginners. The current need is at Pleasant Hill Branch, 211 East William Cannon Drive, on Wednesday evenings for three months beginning in January 2027. The Library says it supplies the curriculum and materials.

The page does not publish a headcount for either language role or say that a particular language is more urgently needed. Applicants should identify their language, relevant fluency and schedule through the official process and let Library staff determine the match.

Storytime and Board With Books offer public-facing program roles

Storytime assistants help with setup, customer service, materials, Children's Room tidying, light shelving and cleanup; youth librarians, not volunteers, do the reading and performance. The current page lists Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Southeast Branch, plus Wednesday and Thursday slots from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m. at Twin Oaks. It asks for at least six months.

Twin Oaks also displays a Saturday Storytime slot, but labels that volunteer pending. Help Austin is not counting the Saturday slot as open. The page repeats the Thursday Storytime line; this guide lists that time once rather than inventing a second vacancy from duplicated text.

At Central Library, Board With Books needs a volunteer on the third Thursday of each month from 5 to 8 p.m. The page describes one position available and one pending. The role favors people who enjoy modern and traditional board games and can create a welcoming, nonjudgmental space over a six-month commitment.

Two less conventional routes are accepting applications

The Austin History Center says it is accepting applications from college and graduate students in information science, informatics, archival studies and related subjects who need supervised capstone or practicum experience. Capacity is limited, and an application is only the first step toward a semester project.

The Central Library programs-and-events team is also accepting additions to its volunteer pool. Those volunteers may help with programs about once a month or more, should know the Central Library layout, and need to be ready for varied customer-service tasks. The Library requests a six-month commitment and says volunteers who can walk or ride the bus are preferred so event attendees have more parking space.

Neither listing promises an immediate assignment date. A volunteer pool can involve waiting for a suitable program, while a student project depends on supervision and course needs. Applicants should ask what the first likely assignment and expected cadence would be before committing.

Adult onboarding is a multi-step process, not a drop-in shift

Adult applicants must be at least 17 on the application date. Austin Public Library describes a process that includes the GivePulse application, a phone or in-person screening interview, an accepted placement offer, orientation and a successful criminal-background investigation.

The general adult program asks for at least three months at two hours per week, though several current roles request six months or a different cadence. The role-specific commitment should control when it is more demanding than the general minimum.

Applicants requesting a reasonable accommodation can ask for the Library's Volunteer Accommodation Request Form. Paul Lopez is listed as Volunteer Services Coordinator at 512-974-7443 and APL.Volunteers@austintexas.gov; use the current official page in case the contact changes.

Pending, closed and teen routes require different timing

Children's Room greeter, circulation and Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master slots are currently labeled volunteer pending. English Talk Time, Coding4All, Sewing/Mending Circle and the Austin History Center docent role say no opportunities at this time. Those descriptions are useful context, but they are not current openings.

The fall teen volunteer application is closed. The Library says spring applications are generally accepted December 1–31 and summer applications March 1–31, with applicants ages 13–17. Seventeen-year-olds are also eligible for the adult program.

Austin Public Library does not offer one-time group-service projects through this program. People seeking a one-day team activity should use the separate organizations the Library recommends instead of submitting a group request for these recurring roles.
