The live schedule has October openings in four kinds of work
The Asian American Resource Center's current GivePulse page invites community members to support its Senior Program and lists 371 shifts in a series running through June 2027. On October 4, 2026, the page displayed 75 remaining positions across the series and open October dates for garden watering, a garden workday, technology-class assistance, lunch distribution, and room monitoring or setup.
Those numbers are a live snapshot, not a promise that 75 October places will remain. Individual listings control availability. For example, the October 7 garden workday showed one of two places filled, while several one-person October shifts showed no registrant yet. Registration closes 18 hours before each shift or when its space runs out.
Start with the GivePulse schedule, choose a specific listing and complete its registration. Do not travel based only on this story; confirm that the shift still appears in your GivePulse account and follow any message from AARC staff.
- Use the live schedule because each role has its own capacity and cutoff.
- Check the exact start time; October shifts range from one hour to a little over two hours.
- Wait for registration confirmation before going to the center.
- Plan for the AARC address at 8401 Cameron Road unless the listing says otherwise.
Garden shifts begin October 5, with one larger workday October 7
The schedule lists one-person garden-watering shifts from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on October 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, 19 and 20. The description asks volunteers to check in at the front desk and recommends bringing a water bottle and shade hat.
A separate First Wednesday Garden Workday is listed for October 7 from 10 to 11 a.m. Volunteers help senior participants water, weed, plant and maintain the Senior Garden. The live page showed one of two places remaining when Help Austin reviewed it.
Garden watering and the workday are different listings. Register for the exact role you intend to attend, prepare for outdoor conditions, and recheck for weather or program updates before leaving.
Technology aides help participants follow the instructor
AARC lists Technology Class Aide shifts on October 13, 14 and 20 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The classes are taught by Austin Free-Net; the volunteer helps senior participants navigate computers or smartphones while the teacher leads the lesson.
The listing recommends familiarity with computers and smartphones. It describes Tuesday classes as beginner level and Wednesday classes as intermediate level, so an aide should expect to explain steps patiently rather than teach a separate curriculum.
Each of the visible October technology shifts had one volunteer position on October 4. That makes the role current but limited-capacity. Register only while the live listing shows room, and use the contact route on GivePulse if you need to clarify accessibility or the devices involved.

Lunch service and room support are distinct onsite roles
The October 14 Lunch Service Support shift runs from noon to 1 p.m. and helps the Meals on Wheels site coordinator distribute lunch at AARC. The live description explicitly says a food-handler certificate is not required for this shift.
The October 15 Room Monitor and Setup shift runs from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. It places a volunteer in the Quiet Activity Room to monitor independent activities and help AARC staff set up tables and chairs. Closed-toe shoes are required for that role.
The City's program page describes general volunteers more broadly as helping with lunch distribution, technology literacy, craft preparation and other staff-directed tasks. Volunteers may serve a full or partial general shift when the listing allows it, but should record their expected arrival and departure times during registration.

Volunteers must be at least 16, and returning service can trigger a background check
GivePulse sets the series age limit at 16 and older and lists a background check among the requirements. The City's AARC page explains the sequence more precisely: general volunteers complete their first shift, then must complete a City of Austin criminal background investigation because the work is near vulnerable populations.
The same page uses a different sequence for volunteer instructors. People proposing an ongoing wellness or education class should have experience or training, email AARC staff directly, and complete the City background investigation as part of that instructor route. Instructor service takes place in person during Senior Program hours, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Senior Program serves Austin-area residents age 50 and older with an emphasis on pan-Asian American culture and community. Its public schedule includes meals, wellness, education and games, but volunteers should follow staff direction and respect participant privacy rather than treating the center as a drop-in observation opportunity. Help Austin reviewed both official pages on October 4, 2026.
